Rexam Gains FDA Approval For Staked Prefilled Syringe Safety Device.

FDA has granted 510(k) approval for Rexam Healthcare’s Safe n’Sound device, a fully passive device that features a protective sheath which activates automatically once the medicine has been administered, providing protection against needle sticks.

SCHOTT North America Inc. appoints Linda S. Mayer to the office of president and CEO, making her the first woman to head the 2,800-employee strong North American operations of the specialty glass and materials technologies manufacturer. She succeeds former President and CEO Dr. Gerald Fine who became a director of SCHOTT Corp. and a member of the company’s North American Advisory Board in January.

Needle-Trap Label Offered With Detachable Label Parts

Schreiner MediPharm (www.schreiner-medipharm.com) has launched the next generation of its Needle-Trap solution with the addition of detachable parts promoting care giver documentation.

The Needle-Trap label integrated safety device helps prevent healthcare personnel from incidental needlestick injuries after administering injections, while the integrated detachable label parts are intended to be attached to the patient’s medical records and vaccination pass for easy documentation, says Gene Dul, president, Schreiner MediPharm, a business unit of Schreiner Group LP.

West Plastic Syringe With Prefixed Needle Targets Biologics

West (www.westpharma.com) has expanded its family of cyclic olefin polymer (COP) products with the introduction of the Daikyo Crystal Zenith (CZ) 1-mL long insert needle syringe system. The 1-mL long format has been favored for packaging of biologics in prefilled syringes. In manufacturing at West’s Scottsdale, AZ, facility, the needle is insert-molded into the plastic syringe.

West and Progressive Medical Inc. Announce Distributor Agreement for Vial2Bag

West Pharmaceutical Services (Lionville, PA) and Progressive Medical Inc. (St. Louis, MO) sign an exclusive two-year U.S. distributor agreement for the Vial2Bag needleless reconstitution system.  Progressive Medical will market the Vial2Bag system to acute care hospitals, surgical centers, in-home health providers, and closed-door pharmacy providers.

Vetter Launches Parenteral Fill-Finish Facility In Skokie, IL

Vetter (Ravensburg, Germany) is developing fill-finish capacity at a new facility in Skokie, IL that will include three manufacturing clean rooms and state-of-the-art microbiological and chemical laboratories. An expansion of Vetter Development Service, the 24,000 sq ft facility will be operational by the beginning of the fourth quarter 2010, says Vetter managing director Thomas Otto.

Unilife and Stason Pharmaceuticals Sign Agreement for Unitract 1mL Safety Syringe

Unilife Corporation announced it has signed an exclusive five-year agreement with Stason Pharmaceuticals Inc. to market the Unitract 1mL safety syringe in Japan, China, and Taiwan.  Stason's Taiwan-based strategic alliance affiliate, Standard Chem. and Pharm. Co., LTD will act as the primary distributor of the product within these designated territories.

Healthcare Worker Sentenced to Prison for Syringe Tampering and More

A former scrub technician has been sentenced to 30 years' federal imprisonment for crimes including tampering with syringes and exposing patients to blood-borne pathogens. Yesterday in Colorado, Kristen Parker was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Robert E. Blackburn to serve 360 months (30 years) in federal prison, followed by 3 years of supervised release.
