Shorewood Packaging Facilities in China Receive Certifications

Shorewood Packaging, a business of International Paper, reports that its manufacturing facility in Kunshan, China, has been awarded Chain-of-Custody (C-O-C) certification from the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC). In addition, the company’s facility in Guangzhou, China, which received FSC C-O-C certification in 2009, has been awarded PEFC C-O-C certification.

Both facilities produce paperboard packaging for use in the personal care, OTC pharmaceutical, and other industries.

The Kunshan facility is the eighth Shorewood manufacturing operation to receive C-O-C certification. The other COC-certified operations are in Indianapolis, IN; East Flat Rock and Weaverville, NC; Louisville, KY.; Smiths Falls and Toronto, Ontario, Canada; and Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, China.  Certification processes are underway for facilities in Danville, VA, and Aguascalientes, Mexico.

“The successful completion of these C-O-C certifications in Kunshan and Guangzhou brings us another step closer to meeting our goal of becoming a completely Chain-of-Custody certified operation,” said Robert Anstine, vice president of marketing and business development for Shorewood Packaging, in a press release. “We remain a committed leader in sustainable packaging and environmental issues.   Shorewood is positioned to continue providing our customers with the benefit of printing the appropriate certified label on packaging and printed paper components we produce for them.”

The audits were conducted by the Hong Kong office of Bureau Veritas Certification Inc. According to the press release, "Chain-of-Custody confirms that a company has a tracking system in place to record the possession and transfer of certified wood fiber along the entire supply chain – from the forests through all stages of production to the end user."
