NEWS Box Sales on the Rise

Kassandra Kania

The Freedonia Group Inc. (Cleveland) recently conducted a study of the trends in corrugated and paperboard box sales, projecting that sales of these products will climb 2% per year through 2005 to reach $36.7 billion. Corrugated and solid fiber boxes accounted for 72% of industry sales in 2000, with folding boxes comprising most of the remainder.

Pharmaceutical boxes were the second-largest segment of the chemicals and allied product box market in 2000. According to the study, box sales to the pharmaceutical market will increase at a rate of 3.6% through 2005 to $920 million. The demand for folding and corrugated boxes will also increase along with the increased use of drugs, which can be attributed to the aging of the population, a tendency toward self-care, and a greater reliance on drug therapy.

In addition, folding paperboard box sales will benefit from growth in blister packs, which use paperboard boxes as secondary packaging. Although there is a trend toward eliminating the secondary container due to cost and waste reduction, growth opportunities are prevalent among higher-priced over-the-counter drugs, which generate a sufficient profit margin to justify a more elaborate packaging system. Blister packs packaged in folding paperboard boxes will continue to capture market share from vials and bottles due to their efficacy in prompting the correct dosage of medication, as well as the space the box affords for graphics and print. Pharmaceutical shipping containers will also benefit from the use of unit-dose drugs, which are typically shipped in higher-value-added configurations with special features such as compartments.
