Alcan Packaging—Medical Flexibles Americas (Chicago) and The Paper Products Ltd. (Maharashtra, India) received Special Citations at the 19th DuPont Awards Competition on August 11, 2006, at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts in Wilmington, DE.

The competition, sponsored by DuPont Packaging, received 135 entries vying for acknowledgment in the event that honors innovation in packaging across the supply chain. The eight-member judging panel evaluated the entries for functionality, marketplace acceptance, and improvement from current packaging. Other criteria that the panel took into consideration included material specification of the package structure, overall design, engineering or technical innovation, and impact on consumers.

Alcan Packaging received its citation for its peelable autoclave foil pack-aging designed to provide hermetic product protection. The high-barrier terminal-steam-sterilization package comprises three layers: a top web, a lidding or pouch-front web, and a bottom or pouch-back web. A highly extensible aluminum foil lamination was developed with a sealing surface that is compatible with the peelable top web in order to optimize cold forming to the bottom web. The top web features a peelable heat-seal that provides product protection and can be easily opened after sterilization.

The Paper Products Ltd. received a citation for its package with a tamper-evident sleeve and hidden promotional message. The package—used for products such as Pond’s Institute’s talcum powders—features a tamper-evident promotional patch in a sleeve designed to be removable so that it could be sent to the product manufacturer for redemption. The patch’s edges are perforated so that it can be removed while the sleeve remains attached to the package. A UV-readable ink with a special signature is used on the patches with big prizes to verify authenticity.
