SATO and Cadi Scientific announced a joint venture to develop the PJM RFID Thermo IC Tag at HIMMS Asia Pacific 2015 held in Singapore Sept. 6-10.
The robotic monoblock Unica, which integrates deep-draw thermoforming, robotic pick-and-place transfer, and carton packaging operations, was displayed at Pack Expo International by Marchesini Group. Taking up only a small footprint of 26.5 ft, the system can be used to package syringes, vials, and carpules as well as small containers, tubes, and dispensers.
A company representative tells PMP News that Unica can also be used for sterile medical thermoformed packaging.
The Institute of Packaging Professionals has announced the winners of its 2013 AmeriStar Package Awards Competition, and among the winners is a thermoformed tray system featuring one novel component. The TKA Femoral Packaging System for Arthrex uses Perfecseal’s new PerfecForm OrthoSecure, a new material combining both polyurethane (PU) and PETG in one two-layer formable film, instead of using a separate PU insert, minimizing the number of package components.

A study was conducted recently to determine whether packaging styles influence the shopping behaviors of consumers. Klöckner Pentaplast worked with Clemson University to compare consumer reactions to clear plastic clamshells with those to printed paperboard boxes. Eye-tracking research was conducted at Clemson University’s CUShop in a recreated shopping environment.
Sealed Air has purchased the Costa Rica operation of Advanced Thermoforming Enterprise (ATE), a privately owned medical thermoforming company based in Oceanside, CA. The business will be integrated into Sealed Air’s existing Medical Applications business unit, Sealed Air reported in a press release.
ATE custom designs thermoformed parts for the medical, pharma, and bio-pharma markets. Its Costa Rica operation was started in 2005. It has Class 8 (100,000) cleanroom facilities and the site is ISO 9001 certified for medical device packaging.
