America's biopharmaceutical research companies are developing 901 biotechnology medicines and vaccines to address cancer, arthritis, diabetes, and other debilitating and life-threatening diseases, reports the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA). These include 353 for cancer and related conditions, 187 for infectious diseases, 69 for autoimmune diseases, and 59 for cardiovascular diseases, PhRMA announced in a press release.

Most new packaging equipment can improve your line’s Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) compared with that of existing, less modern lines. In almost every case, machine manufacturers have stepped up their offerings in machine diagnostics, rapid/repeatable changeovers, and flexibility. Sure, all manufacturers’ offerings are not the same, but you will find most new equipment to be more efficient than past machines.
A new system launched in Brazil at FCE Pharma is designed to offer a stand-alone solution to support different approaches to pharmaceutical product serialization. VisioCIT can handle either labeling or direct coding, reports Christoph Lehmann, director of Uhlmann VisioTec GmbH (www.visiotecamerica.com), which can position companies to meet Brazil’s pending rules as well as others around the world.
At the annual meeting of Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA), Christopher Viehbacher, chief executive officer of sanofi-aventis, resumed his role as board chairman, while John C. Lechleiter, Ph.D., chairman, president, and chief executive officer of Eli Lilly and Co. was elected as chairman-elect of the PhRMA Board of Directors and Robert J. Hugin, president and chief executive officer of Celgene Corp. was elected PhRMA’s board treasurer. Viehbacher assumed the chairmanship in December 2010.
Anomatic Corp., which offers high-volume metal anodizing processing for the medical, pharmaceutical, personal care, and other packaging industries, is expanding its Connecticut production facility. The facility, which opened in 2007 with just three machines, will add an additional eight presses by July 2011. Sixteen presses are currently installed and capacity is expected to increase from 300 million to 500 million stamped components annually.
