Adding Color for Branding, Security

In an effort to enhance and protect brands, Rollprint Packaging Products Inc. has developed a color-changing sealant for heat-seal applications. The coextrusion-coated sealant can be applied to any thermally stable web such as polyester, nylon, and polypropylene or on any of Rollprint’s ClearFoil barrier structures.

Using the new sealant, medical device and pharmaceutical manufacturers can color code products by type or size. Because the web remains transparent, package contents are visible through the color.

Could Cost Control Efforts Transform Medical Packaging?

Medical packaging converters report that they’re being asked to offer up suggestions for saving costs. But how likely is a conservative medical device manufacturing industry to make changes?

"The industry has traditionally been hamstrung by expensive and time-consuming revalidation work,” reports Michael Wollberg, sales manager for Printpack Medical. “They haven’t had enough resources to look at legacy packages.”

Ironically, however, the push for greater cost savings could be arming MDMs with just the resources they need. “Cost pressures are increasing so much that resources are being made available to reconsider some of these older designs,” adds Wollberg.

Converters Taking a Flexible Approach

Medical device manufacturers are asking for packaging quality, performance, and service support, all with cost savings. Medical packaging converters are stepping up to the challenge.

According to a recent purchasing study conducted by Pharmaceutical & Medical Packaging News, pharmaceutical and medical device packaging professionals value quality above all other considerations when searching for suppliers. But, most likely to no one’s surprise, price is a close second. (Our 2012 Packaging Survey, conducted by Readex Research, revealed that on a scale from 1 to 5 with 5 representing a “very important” supplier/vendor characteristic, respondents rated quality 4.7 and price 4.3.)
