Millions of pharmaceutical products have been affected by recalls this year. Reasons have included the presence of particulates in a syringe, packaging the wrong product (such as a tablet containing the wrong dosage); out-of-spec products, and contamination by a foreign substance. Although many of these issues were caught at the wholesale level, others weren’t—and some had the potential to cause life-threatening issues for end-users or consumers.
A new system launched in Brazil at FCE Pharma is designed to offer a stand-alone solution to support different approaches to pharmaceutical product serialization. VisioCIT can handle either labeling or direct coding, reports Christoph Lehmann, director of Uhlmann VisioTec GmbH (www.visiotecamerica.com), which can position companies to meet Brazil’s pending rules as well as others around the world.
At Pack Expo 2010, Pharmaworks Inc. introduced Scanware 3-D inspection technology on its latest TF1e thermoformer. The LYNX-SPECTRA 3D is the world’s first pharmaceutical vision system on the market that allows inspection of an object in three dimensions, Pharmaworks reported in a press release.
Optel system replaces manual inspection for improved quality.
Pfizer is introducing camera-based vision inspection on five high-speed bottle filling lines at its Pearl River, NY, facility. The plant is implementing the Slat Filler Inspector from Optel Vision (Quebec City, Canada) for 100% automated inspection of solid dose multivitamin products.
“We saw that with this system successfully in place, we could achieve even higher quality standards. The object is to drive product quality improvements and customer satisfaction,” says John Moynihan, packaging engineer, Pfizer.
Xyntek, Inc. (Philadelphia) has launched two machine vision solutions for pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturing and packaging. The MVX-AMS (Audit Message Server) adds compliant traceability and history to vision inspection operations and meets 21 CFR Part 11 requirements. The MVX-OCV 5.0 (Optical Character Verification) system verifies product quality for regulated pharmaceutical, medical device, and healthcare organizations.
The Label Printers (Aurora, IL), a manufacturer of custom labels and packaging, reports that it has just purchased the BST Promark Shark 4000 LEX 100% Inspection system to examine 100% of the printed web 100% of the time.

Inspection equipment manufacturer Optel Vision (Quebec City, QC, Canada) has moved headquarters to the Parc Technologique in Quebec City. The company will house its main R&D and automated inspection systems manufacturing in the 20,000-sq-ft facility.
