The State of Inspection
Could installing new types of inspection equipment prevent more recalls? Suppliers offer their solutions—as well as their opinions—on whether or not the pharma industry is doing enough to utilize new inspection technologies.

Millions of pharmaceutical products have been affected by recalls this year. Reasons have included the presence of particulates in a syringe, packaging the wrong product (such as a tablet containing the wrong dosage); out-of-spec products, and contamination by a foreign substance. Although many of these issues were caught at the wholesale level, others weren’t—and some had the potential to cause life-threatening issues for end-users or consumers.
Long-Dwell Flow Wrapper Supports Device Packaging
Flow wrapping has gained support as a cost-effective automated alternative for medical device packaging. Vendors including Amcor and Perfecseal have introduced films for device packaging engineered to perform on high-speed flow wrapping machines.
For applications sealing thicker substrates used in device packaging, Bosch Packaging Technology (www.boschpackaging.com) introduced at Pack Expo Las Vegas the Pack 301 LD (long dwell) horizontal flow wrapper. The unit produces up to 150 packs per minute.
Robots, Vision & Motion Control Show under New Name
Automate is the new name for the International Robots, Vision & Motion Control Show to be held at McCormick Place in Chicago, March 21-24, 2011. Sponsored by the Robotic Industries Association (RIA), Automated Imaging Association (AIA), and the Motion Control Association (MCA), the show will be co-located with ProMat 2011, the show for the material handling industry and logistics industry sponsored by Material Handling Industry of America (MHIA).
PMMI Certified Trainers Offer Instruction at the CI-Vision Vision Institute
Mettler-Toledo CI-Vision has established the CI-Vision Vision Institute (CVI) to provide enhanced training for its machine vision systems. Trainers certified by the Packaging Machinery Manufacturers Institute (PMMI) will provide both classroom and hands-on training on the basic technology, effective application, and proper maintenance of CI-Vision machine vision inspection systems.
Robert Willett Takes the Helm at Cognex Corp.
Robert Willett now serves as president and chief operating officer, Cognex Corp. (Natick, MA). Willett will assume these responsibilities in addition to his existing role as president of the Modular Vision Systems Division, which is the largest operating division of Cognex. Mr. Willett will continue reporting to Dr. Robert J. Shillman, who remains the company’s chairman and CEO.
Toshiba Imaging Systems Division Appoints New Sales Director
Toshiba America’s Imaging Systems Division (TAIS) has announced the appointment of Paul Dempster to the position of director, medical imaging and factory automation. Dempster will oversee sales, business development, and marketing activities for Toshiba’s advanced video imaging technology and high resolution CMOS and CCD cameras, which are used in surgical imaging, endoscopy, factory automation, machine vision, non-destructive testing, and specialty high-definition-video applications.
