Packaging's Got Potential

Hospital readmissions within 30 days of discharge cost the Medicare program approximately $15 billion, according to the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission. Laura Cranston, RPh, Executive Director, Pharmacy Quality Alliance Inc. (PQA) shares that the largest component of those costs are due to some medication-related adverse drug event, she explains. The priority of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is to reduce these costs, and effective medication reconciliation and ensuring appropriate care transitions can play a major role.

Changing Patient Behavior with Packaging

Human behavior has been all but ignored as the root cause for the failure of healthcare adherence, argues John Bitner, a design engineer who has studied human interaction with packaging for decades. “People are adverse to change,” he says. “Even when faced with a very bad disease, and they know a lifestyle change is essential to survival, for whatever reason, they cannot.”

Collaborating to Launch a Sustainable Compliance Package

Keystone Folding Box Co. (www.keyboxco.com), a manufacturer of paperboard packaging, has introduced Ecoslide-RX, a compliance package made from 100% recyclable material. Using unbleached paperboard with a clay-coated surface, Ecoslide-RX was developed to support blister packages employing a minimal amount of film and foil, explains Ward Smith, director of marketing for Keystone. The secondary package can be used for a child-resistant (F=1), senior-friendly compliance solution.

Bottom Line on Compliance Packaging

As innovative patient care models are tested and put into practice, new studies show the value of compliance-prompting designs.
Packaging that promotes compliance will receive increased attention as governments and private insurers seek to ensure patient safety and reduce healthcare costs.
Studies have shown, for example, that achieving high adherence levels in typically low-compliance therapies such as diabetes, cholesterol, and high blood pressure can reduce healthcare costs by 40 to 50%.

Packaging’s Role in Adherence

It has been one of the most debated issues for at least as long as I have been writing for PMP News (almost 14 years): Should packaging play a role in encouraging patients to adhere to prescription drug regimens?

Patient Strategies Highlighted at RxAdherence Conference

As new studies demonstrate substantial impact of compliance-prompting designs on patient adherence, packagers and marketers need to develop more in-depth understanding of what influences patients, presenters said at the RxAdherence conference in New Brunswick, NJ.

Healthcare reform priorities--and a national awareness program launching this week--are among trends focusing attention on the chronic and costly issue of patient non-compliance, speakers said.

“It’s pretty clear packaging has been grossly underestimated,” said Dr. Ted Lithgow, president and chief science officer, MWV (Meadwestvaco) Healthcare. Lithgow reported on an MWV study of 3.1 million patients that compared traditional vials with MWV’s Shellpack.
