Paper Eases Product Use and Environmental Strain

Paperboard cartons have expanded well beyond just secondary packaging. “Protection of the contents is one of the main purposes, but skillful design and innovative thinking come together to offer a whole range of other benefits,” explains Pro Carton, the Association of European Cartonboard and Carton Manufacturers. These benefits can include safety, visibility, shelf appeal, and even social responsibility, the association reports. Such benefits contributed to recent recognition bestowed upon winning pharmaceutical/dental cartons in the 2009 Pro Carton/ECMA Awards. Rondo AG, a member of the Körber Medipak Group, which is exhibiting in Booth #C22 at Pharmapack 2010, was recognized for the D-RaCe wallet in the program’s pharmaceutical category.

The D-RaCe wallet for packaging dental procedural tools is as small as a business card, explains Rondo. It provides a transparent viewing window through which users can view products packaged securely inside. “This window is particularly practical and useful when a manufacturer uses the special wallet as packaging for different products,” Rondo explains. In this case, FKG Dentaire packages desobturation tools for dentists in the wallet. “The window enables the dentist to see the type of tool inside at a glance.”

Once the wallet has been opened, the tools can be removed easily. An attached booklet insert is also easy to remove and provides generous space for information.

Awards program jurists found the carton “extremely functional.” They reported that “it opened intuitively, and the clever structural design made the contents easy to remove and simple to put back again. The double opening design also allowed space for all the necessary instructions, and it was easy to close after use. The graphics were bold and eye catching, and it was simple to see what the product was.”

Rondo prints the special wallets for FKG Dentaire in the company’s corporate identity colors. A dispersion varnish finish enhances packaging appearance. Blanks are supplied flat and are simple to assemble.

The Rondo AG company specializes in the development of secure packaging solutions for pharmaceutical products. With its wide range of standard and special folding boxes, Rondo is a leading manufacturer of folding boxes for the pharmaceutical industry. Production sites are located in Allschwil, Switzerland; Ejpovice, Czech Republic; and at Rondo-Pak in Valley Forge, PA, USA. Together with its sister companies Dividella (Switzerland) and MediSeal (Germany) Rondo belongs to the Körber Medipak Group, the pharmaceuticals division of Hamburg’s Körber Group.

In its Sustainability category, Pro Carton/ECMA recognized a kit by Carl Edelmann GmbH for Coltène/Whaledent. Molded plastic components were replaced by cartonboard with a modular kit. Pro Carton reports that “the modular design reduces tooling costs, increases cost effectiveness, and facilitates packing.”
