Needle-free Option for Hemophilia Patients Adds Convenience

West Pharmaceutical Services Inc. and Grifols USA L.L.C. announce the availability of West’s Mix2Vial filtered transfer system for the reconstitution of Grifols’ coagulation therapies. The Mix2Vial system, developed and manufactured by West’s subsidiary Medimop Medical Projects Ltd., is a patented device designed for easy reconstitution of lyophilized drugs.

“We continually strive to meet our customer's needs and enhance the convenience and ease of using our medicines,” says Bill Stopher, president of Grifols USA. “Introduction of the Mix2Vial transfer set represents just one more step we can take to address the challenges of living with hemophilia.”

The plastic, needle-free device is manufactured with a built-in 15 micron filter specifically designed to be used with the sterile Water for Injection diluent packaged with Grifols’ coagulation products. The Mix2Vial system rapidly transfers water to the product vial, making the reconstituted coagulation therapy immediately available for aspiration into any luer lock syringe for injection.

“Convenience and safety are of the utmost importance for the patients and healthcare providers using West’s products; our reconstitution systems address both of these issues,” says Moshe Barkan, VP and general manager, administrations systems, West. “The Mix2Vial system is an excellent delivery system for Grifols and an example of our continued commitment to developing innovative products that meet the needs of pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical customers and the patient populations they serve. Our partnership with Grifols is proof that leading drug manufacturers continue to view West as a trusted resource for drug administration options.”

Availability of the Mix2Vial transfer system will be phased in over several months. Currently, DemoPacks are available for instructional purposes so that patients and nurses can become familiar with the new system.

“As someone who has a bleeding disorder and has to treat regularly, I like the way the Mix2Vial is made to fit the solution because it makes the reconstitution process quicker and easier,” says Lesa Kaercher, who serves as the Hemophilia Federation of America Board Representative for the Bleeding Disorders Association of the Southern Tier (New York). “The Mix2Vial makes me more comfortable with the whole process because it is easy to use and doesn't require any needles to mix the medicine,” she continued.
