Latest KCI layoffs hitting about 50 S.A. workers
July 16--Kinetic Concepts Inc. has given notice to some 100 employees -- about half of them in San Antonio -- making for at least the third round of layoffs in the past two years.
Mike Barger, spokesman for the locally based wound-care company, said the job cuts primarily affected U.S. employees and represented about 2 percent of KCI's global workforce of approximately 4,400 people.
The company employs about 1,500 people in San Antonio, down from about 2,000 reported in 2011.
Barger said the layoffs targeted a "smattering" of positions in sales, service, and information technology. He said call center jobs in Montana and North Carolina were not affected.
"Like many other companies, KCI adapts to changing market dynamics in an increasingly competitive health care environment," he said in an emailed statement. "We must always look for ways to improve efficiency in order to deliver on business objectives and financial goals."
About a year ago, KCI announced plans to cut 300 positions around the country, though fewer than 10 of the affected positions were in San Antonio.
The move followed a layoff of 127 people, including 114 in San Antonio, six months before. The job cuts mostly involved administrative positions and were part of a realignment of the company's three business units.
The cuts came in the wake of the leveraged buyout of KCI led by Apax Partners, a London-based private equity firm. The 2011 deal was valued at $6.1 billion.
Some 95 jobs also were lost in January, two months after KCI sold its specialty hospital beds business to Getinge Group. Getinge, a Swedish health care company, closed the San Antonio manufacturing plant to consolidate production at facilities in Poland and China. The acquisition of the Therapeutic Support Systems unit was a deal valued at about $275 million.
KCI specializes in wound-care products that use negative pressure, or suction, to heal chronic wounds. Its V.A.C. Therapy System has been used on more than 7 million wounds in more than 25 countries.
