EPA Cites Diamond Packaging’s Wind Power Use

Diamond Packaging (Rochester, NY) has announced that it appears on the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) new Top 20 Printers List of the largest green power purchasers in the commercial printing business.

Diamond purchases more than 6 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of green power annually, enough to meet 100 percent of it’s purchased electricity use. The company said it is buying a utility green power product from RG&E.

The packager ranks No. 7 on the Top 20 Printers List, and qualifies for EPA’s Green Power Leadership Club. Club members must purchase ten times the EPA’s Climate Protection Partnerships Division’s (CPPD) minimum requirement organization-wide.

One of nine Top Partner Lists that EPA releases quarterly to highlight some of America’s largest green power purchasers, the Top 20 Printers List debuted on July 27.

“By supporting green power, Diamond Packaging is reducing its greenhouse gas emissions, supporting clean energy technologies, and contributing to a clean energy future,” said Kathleen Hogan, director, CPPD. EPA.

Diamond’s 6 million kWh purchase is equivalent to avoiding the CO2 emissions of more than 800 passenger vehicles per year, or the amount of energy needed to power more than 600 average US homes annually, EPA said.

Green power is electricity generated by renewable resources such as wind, solar, geothermal, biogas, biomass, and low-impact hydro. Wind energy purchased by Diamond is part of the company’s greenbox initiative, a commitment to research, design, and implementation of packaging solutions that are innovative and sustainable. The comprehensive approach is designed to minimize environmental impact throughout the supply chain.
