The increasing focus on security packaging has extended to blister package manufacturing as well. MGS Machine Corp. (Minneapolis), for example, is currently producing the award-winning Dosepak compliance package by MeadWestvaco.

MGS uses its Stealth continuous-motion cartoner as the central piece of equipment for creating the Dosepak package, which contains an outer carton, a fold-over heat-sealed inner blister card, and a unique locking feature. According to MGS representatives, the Stealth achieves speeds in access of 130 cartons per minute during the Dosepak production process. A heat-sealed inner card is inspected and folded in the Stealth’s infeed section, then loaded into the erected carton. A unique carton prebreak device ensures that the thin carton is properly erected. In addition, a Nordson hot-melt adhesive system is utilized for sealing the Dosepak’s major carton flaps.

The package’s inner blister card is automatically fed to the cartoner via one of two options offered. The first is an offline solution that utilizes a standard MGS rotary feeder to pick and place the flat blister cards into the infeed buckets of the Stealth cartoner. The second fully automatic option utilizes the MGS configuration module to directly interface with the customer’s heat-seal machine. Finally, rows of blister cards are received, inverted, rotated 90 degrees, and automatically transferred into the infeed buckets of the Stealth cartoner. MGS also offers optional blister inspection (pill presence), carton coding, and outserting.
