Protective desiccants

Desiccants absorb moisture and increase product stability.

Desiccant Delivery Systems

A company offers vials and containers with coinjected desiccant linings that are airtight and leakproof. The products are sterile by process and are available in any size or color. Desiccant sheets are also available for insertion in packaging to ensure "product-around" protection. Material is produced in various sizes, thicknesses, and formulations. Desiccant film is delivered in a variety of widths to meet customers' specifications and can also be supplied with adhesive backing. Film can be made to change color from blue to pink when adsorbed capacity is reached, and reveal a written cautionary message. Canisters

A company has increased its canister desiccant production at its Belen, NM, facility by 30%. This adds to the company's worldwide production resources, which include canister production operations in Europe and Australia. Desiccant canisters are suitable for high-speed automatic insertion. The company's specialized canisters are designed specifically to reduce dust counts on activated-carbon desiccant products. These canisters incorporate a thin, lint-free, cellulose-fiber disk into the top of their polypropylene shell. This proprietary process prevents carbon dust particles from escaping. The dust particles can contaminate highly sensitive products, a problem previously associated with canister desiccants. The distinctive shape of the canister makes it easy to differentiate from pharmaceutical tablets and capsules in the container, thereby preventing accidental ingestion. The canister range of sizes easily accommodates most bottle sizes. Süd-Chemie Performance Packaging, Belen, NM; 800/989-3374; www.s-cpp.com

Pillow Pak

A line of desiccant sachets consists of a wide variety of sizes, configurations, and substrates. Pillow Paks can be used to absorb moisture vapor, odors, or gas. Custom blends are available and can be used as a multifunction (two in one) package; for example, a 50-50 blend of silica gel and carbon for moisture and odor. The sachets are available in either individual or strip-pak form in sizes ranging from 0.25 to 14 g. The packets can be silica gel, indicating silica gel, molecular sieve, clay, or activated carbon. Pillow Paks meet FDA requirements when packaged in Tyvek. Desiccare Inc., Pomona, CA; 800/446-6650; www.desiccare.com

Natrasorb

A broad range of desiccant bags are available in standard sizes from 1/6 to 80 units. The smaller Natrasorb bags meet all the requirements of MIL-D-3464 and are available in 1/6, 1/3, 1/2 and 1-unit sizes for a variety of applications including pharmaceuticals. They are the only MIL-SPEC desiccant bags made with uncoated Tyvek, resulting in lower cost while providing good seal strength and taking up less space inside the package. The sorbents are sized to meet specific requirements. Compact bag sizes provide adsorption capacities equal to those of larger-size bags. The smaller sizes are environmentally friendly as they require less film and result in less waste than larger sizes. Multisorb Technologies Inc., Buffalo, NY; 888/SORBENT; www.multisorb.com
