Packaging Resource Center: Show Coverage: Strategic Collaboration

Collaborative outsourcing and combination-product development are hot topics at MD&M East.

Killing two birds with one stone may seem like a gruesome expression but it makes for smart and innovative business practices.

Medical Design & Manufacturing East, collocated with EastPack and other events, will take place at the Jacob K. Javits Center in New York City June 11–14. More than a thousand companies are scheduled to exhibit at the show, which will feature six special-focus pavilions: Drug Delivery Devices/Combination Product Solutions, LaserTec, Medical Electronics Manufacturing, PrecisionTec, and Quality.

Conference sessions at this year’s event will cover opportunities to develop and license combination products and packaging, choosing and structuring supplier partnerships, and advanced good manufacturing practices.

On Wednesday, June 13, as part of the Collaborative Outsourcing: Building and Maintaining Supplier Partnerships that Work sessions, Christy Foreman, supervising consumer safety officer, Office of Compliance, CDRH, FDA, will cover compliance issues in outsourcing and purchasing controls.

The Combination Products: Strategic Partnering and Licensing sessions will tackle this topic from different angles during all four days of the conference. On Tuesday, June 12, several case studies will be presented, including “Local Drug Delivery from Polymers,” presented by Ronald Shebuski, partner, Apjohn Group. On Wednesday, Darryl Roberts, vice president of quality services, Cordis Corp., will present “Manufacturing and Packaging Combination Products—Validation and Product Stability.”

EastPack, the largest packaging event on the East coast, will present exhibits of custom automation technology, containers, materials, services, and more. EastPack will feature pavilions dedicated to medical, pharmaceutical, and nutraceutical packaging, cosmetic and personal care packaging, material handling and logistics, and contract packaging and outsourcing.
