Packaging Resource Center: Show Coverage: MD&M and WestPack -- Made for Each Other

Exhibitors and attendees will certainly feel the love when they gather at the Anaheim Convention Center (Anaheim, CA) for this year’s Medical Design & Manufacturing West conference and exhibition. For four days, the West Coast’s largest packaging show will bring together hundreds of exhibitors and thousands of packaging buyers. WestPack, collocated with MD&M West and other events, will begin with conference sessions on Monday, February 12, and continue through Thursday, February 15.

To make up for any potential heartbreak this Valentine’s Day, MD&M West offers two exciting sessions on medical device packaging on February 15. The sessions—402, Part I and Part II—will be chaired by Jan Gates, principal packaging engineer at Guidant Corp. Part I: Packaging Engineering will feature three presentations: a discussion panel—chaired by Mike Scholla of DuPont—that will cover ISO 11607 implementation; a case study on accelerated aging of a rigid medical packaging application, presented by Jack Immes, principal technical service engineer at Eastman Chemical Co.; and an overview by Randy Troutman, Oliver Medical, on the basics of premade thermoform tray design for sterile medical packaging.

Part II: Packaging Validation and Compliance will feature three presentations. Andy O’Gorman of Stockdale Associates Inc. will discuss material qualification for form-fill-seal. Renée Van Dorn, Sr., an R&D project engineer with Advanced Medical Optics, will present “Package Shelf Life Qualification: Real Time and Accelerated.” And Mark Escobedo, chief technologist at Westpak, will cover ISTA 5B refrigerated shipment qualifications.

Pharmaceutical & Medical Packaging News will again sponsor two pavilions at the collocated event. The MedPak Pavilion in MD&M West features high-speed fillers, thermoformers, and sealers. Flexible pouches, labeling and printing equipment, and dispensers are among other packaging equipment and materials that will also be on display. The Pharmaceutical and Nutraceutical Packaging Pavilion in WestPack offers specialty packaging equipment for pharmaceuticals as well as nutritional supplements.

Two other pavilions at WestPack that may interest packaging professionals include the Material Handling and Logistics Pavilion and a brand new pavilion, Contract Packaging and Outsourcing Services. This pavilion brings together contract packagers, manufacturers, and outsourcing service providers to supply services including filling and labeling, warehousing and distribution, R&D, and more. The Material Handling and Logistics Pavilion will feature an array of equipment, products, and services for logistics, automation, and material handling.

The Automation Technology Expo (ATX) West collocated show returns this year, and will feature displays in custom automation, robotics, and vision systems as well as motion control and sensors. For more information, or to register for the shows, call 310/445-4200, or visit www.canontradeshows.com.
