Several pharmaceutical and medical packaging companies were among those honored at the recent 62nd National Paperboard Packaging Competition, sponsored by the Paperboard Packaging Council (PPC; Alexandria, VA).
In the Novelty Items, Mailers, and Marketing/Promotional Packages category, F.M. Howell & Company (Elmira, NY) won a Gold Award for its packaging for Arm & Hammer’s Enamel Care product. This package was honored for its precision die-cutting and gluing, as well as its simulation via printing and embossing of the subtle changes possible with the product’s use. Print-to-cut registration was another key element in obtaining the look of the pop-up molars on the outside of the package.
In the Personal Care & Accessories category, the packaging for Arm & Hammer Advance White was honored with an Excellence Award. This package, manufactured with 100% recycled paperboard packaging, was created by Rock-Tenn Co. (Marshville, NC) for Church & Dwight Co. using 0.016 and 0.018 CCNB laminated with Aurora holographic film.
In the Medicinal Products category, MeadWestvaco Healthcare Packaging was honored with an Excellence Award for its Infuse Bone Graft carton for Medtronic Sofamor Danek. The carton was manufactured with recyclable paperboard. In addition, the Caraustar Custom Packaging Group – Birmingham Carton Plant received an Excellence award for its ICAR Prenatal Physician’s Sample Kit developed for Hawthorn Pharmaceuticals.
In addition, F.M. Howell received an Excellence Award in the Novelty Items, Mailers, and Marketing/Promotional Packages category for its Apokyn Patient Starter Kit, Patient Information Kit, and Formulary Review Information.
Several of the winning packages were manufactured using 100% recycled paperboard. The 100% Recycled Paperboard Alliance’s licensing program allows companies to print a “100% recycled paperboard” symbol on that package to identify it to consumers.
In all, 235 entries were submitted for the competition. Each entry was evaluated by the PPC based on three criteria for excellence: internal production/converting, consumer product environment, and retail consumer environment.
