The Association of Industrial Metallizers, Coaters, and Laminators (AIMCAL; Fort Mill, SC) recently announced the winners of its 2005 annual awards, given in categories such as metallized products, marketing, industrial, and label-retail.
Unifoil Corp. (Fairfield, NJ) was honored with the Technical Award in the Healthcare, Cosmetics, and Toiletries category for its laminating, coating, and sheeting of the acrylic-coated metallized polyester/18-point solid bleached carton for the Oral-B/ Rembrandt Whitening Pen manufactured by Gillette (Boston). The carton was printed with ultraviolet inks that allow the metallized surface of the film to appear shiny. House of Packaging Inc. (City of Industry, CA) is the contract packager for the pen.
In the label-retail category, Flex Products Inc., a JDS Uniphase company (Santa Rosa, CA), received the Technical Award for its SecureShift MetaSwitch label. This anticounterfeiting label utilizes pressure-sensitive adhesive, polyester film, multiple-station printing, and a combination of matching color-shifting and noncolor-shifting inks. A key to its capability is the ink’s incorporation of SecureShift microflakes based on optically variable pigment. The label is currently being used by a major pharmaceutical company to protect prescription drugs in Europe.
Applied Films Corp. (Longmont, CO) was awarded the Technology of the Year Award for its LMS4X-OD optical density monitor, which works in-line in vacuum metallizers to monitor the optical density or transparency of film. Finally, DuPont Teijin Films (Hopewell, VA) was a finalist in the Material category for its Melinex White Light Block film. The opaque coextruded white/ gray polyester film is designed for banner stands, point-of-purchase displays, signage, and backlit displays. The film reportedly does not stretch, deform, or delaminate in use. It is also tearproof, waterproof, crack resistant, chemical resistant, and heat tolerant.
