The winners of the eighth Annual Medical Design Excellence Awards (MDEA) have been announced. Sponsored by Medical Device & Diagnostic Industry (MD&DI) magazine and PMP News parent company Canon Communications llc, the awards recognize the achievements of medical de- vice manufacturers and suppliers. This year’s winners were recognized for product innovation, design and engineering achievement, end-user benefit, and cost-effectiveness in manufacturing and healthcare delivery.

In the Finished Packaging category, 3M ESPE Dental Products (St. Paul, MN) won an award for its RelyX Luting Plus cement product, which is packaged in a clicker dispenser that ensures a precise 1:1 volume ratio of the two-part fluoride-releasing cement.

The self-contained delivery system reportedly reduces mess and provides consistent, reliable cement properties for dentists. The product’s unique packaging allows delivery of an enhanced formulation that provides high strength, low solubility, sustained fluoride release, and excellent adhesion to a variety of substrates. It also offers high bond strength to dentin and enamel.

The company manufactured the special dispenser to allow the two pastes inside to sit on the shelf for up to two years without polymerizing.

3M ESPE and other MDEA winners will receive gold or silver recognition during a ceremony on June 14 at this year’s Medical Design & Manufacturing (MD&M) East Conference and Exposition, held at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City.

Thirty winners were selected in 10 medical product categories. The MDEA program features corporate sponsorship from ATS Automation Tooling Systems, Avail, DuPont Medical Packaging, Electrolizing Corp. of Ohio, The MedTech Group, Memry Corp., Norman Noble Inc., Nusil Silicone Technology, and Precision Extrusion Inc.
