Multivac’s new generation of thermoform packaging machines has won the company the 2008 German Packaging Award for machine innovation. The German Packaging Institute (DVI) presented the award. This is the second prize that Multivac has received this year for these machines; previously, the company received the iF Packaging Award. DVI cited “flawless sanitation” as one of the reasons for awarding the honor.
Almac Clinical Services (Durham, NC) recently passed an inspection at its Durham plant by the UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). The final inspection of the Almac Group’s main sites within the last four months followed the inspections at its Craigavon, UK, and Audubon, PA, facilities. The report from the voluntary inspection stated the Durham site was fully compliant with EU Good Manufacturing Practices, with no critical or major failures noted.
Honeywell (Morris Township, NJ) has announced a three-year supply agreement with Shanghai Haishun Packaging Material Co. Ltd. to provide the Chinese company with Honeywell’s Aclar brand moisture-barrier films. The company will also provide technical services and training to Haishun as part of the agreement. Shanghai Haishun is a leading packaging materials supplier for the Chinese pharmaceutical industry. The company’s production facilities have received Good Manufacturing Practices certification from the Chinese government, and all its products are duly registered as national pharmaceutical packaging materials.
Nanotechnology provider NanoInk Inc. (Skokie, IL) recently announced the launch of its NanoFabrication Systems Division for its new Dip Pen Nanolithography (DPN). The division will provide standard DPN instruments as well as custom solutions, working with customers to provide instruments for nanoscale work. The new division will be headed by Tom Levesque, vice president for DPN business.
In recognition of energy efficiency practices, Wago Kontakttechnik (Minden, Germany) has received the first Arburg Energy Efficiency Award. The electrical connection technology company champions the field of electrical engineering and the energy efficiency that comes with increased automation. It cut energy consumption, cycle times, and rejected parts in its efficiency efforts. Germany-based machine construction company Arburg manufactaurers injection molding machines for plastics processing, including packaging.
To increase its medical business growth, Spectrum Plastics Group (Minneapolis) has installed two new injection molding presses. The Cincinnati Milacron Magna V30-s and Milacron-Fanuc Robotshot S-200i55B were installed as a way to invest in technology to handle existing and new customer programs.
Harpak Inc. (South Easton, MA) is employing checkweighers from Mettler-Toledo Hi-Speed (Ithaca, NY). According to the companies, Hi-Speed’s open modular architecture controls connect easily with Harpak’s master controllers and data systems, allowing users to see how lines are performing.
Millstone Medical Outsourcing (Fall River, MA) has opened a new facility. The new 27,000-sq-ft building features increased space for advanced inspection services, ultrasonic cleaning, and sterile and nonsterile packaging. Due to open this year, a 5000-sq-ft state-of-the-art cleanroom is housed in the building. Millstone’s existing facility will continue to operate, with such amenities as its Class 10,000/ISO 7–rated cleanroom.
