Blister Compliance from Alcan

The METER pack from Alcan Global Pharmaceutical Packaging ComplySolutions is customized to manage patient compliance and persistence.

Alcan Global Pharmaceutical Packaging (Bethlehem, PA) has launched four child-resistant, senior-friendly blister package formats that feature innovative dispensing designs and integrated paperboard or plastic secondary packaging.

The ComplySolutions line includes ComplySolutions DISC that dispenses pills singly from a plastic case. Designed to support complex regimens such as titrations, ComplySolutions METER exposes single or multiple tablets for each dosing when the patient pushes on a tab corresponding to the day’s regimen.

“The ComplySolutions package formats are available for review by pharmaceutical companies and retailers,” says Daryl Madeira, director of marketing, contract packaging division, Alcan Pharmaceutical Packaging. “Some of the designs have completed testing, others are in earlier development stages.

“These formats feature unique blister designs and unique secondary packaging that will appeal to patients, retailers, and brand managers,” he adds. “With the R&D pipeline slowing down, pharmaceutical companies are looking to get more from existing products.”

“A common approach to extending the revenue potential of a given drug has been to file for new indications, or launch in new geographic regions, but that process is riddled with the same R&D and regulatory challenges,” he continues. “I think brand managers are starting to see the value of investing in improved patient adherence and the role blisters can play, and are listening to, if not driving, the discussion.”

“Investing in packaging that supports patient adherence is one way to get more out of a product portfolio,” Madeira adds. “All market research indicates blisters and compliance packaging significantly increase adherence by percentages that can justify the cost of the investment.”

The solutions also include ComplySolutions FOLD, a push-and-pull wallet card, and ComplySolutions SLIDE, a plastic case with a CR push button.

With the ComplySolutions DISC package, opening a hinged door offers sight of the dose, and the patient pushes a button to release the CR lock. The user then moves a slider that rotates the blister to index a dose, and opens a back panel through which the tablet can be pushed. A lock reengages when the slider is returned to its closed position.
